Retail executives to detail their companies’ journeys to deploy cloud-native, microservices-based POS solution
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Jan. 13, 2023 — Aptos, a leader in unified commerce solutions, announced today that it will present an Exhibitor Big Ideas session during NRF 2023: Retail’s Big Show, Getting real about Cloud POS and the future of the store. Scheduled for Jan. 16 from 9:15 to 10 a.m., the session includes panelists Calvin Anderson, Vice President of Global Digital (Dickies, Smartwool, Altra) owned by VF Corporation, and Dylan Bruntil, Global Director of Retail Technology at New Balance. Nikki Baird, Vice President of Strategy at Aptos, will moderate the discussion.
As the retail industry collectively redefines the role of the store, Anderson and Bruntil will share their perspectives on how the store needs to evolve. Topics covered will include shoppers’ expectations when in-store, the value of pop-up shops and what’s needed from technology systems to support immersive store experiences.
When it comes to technology, cloud POS will be central to the discussion as Anderson and Bruntil share firsthand accounts of their companies’ transitions from traditional, in-store server-based POS to cloud-native POS.
New Balance and several brands within the VF portfolio, including Dickies, The North Face and Timberland, are adopting Aptos ONE POS, a cloud-native and mobile-first solution built on the Aptos ONE microservices-based platform.
“New Balance is always looking for ways to empower people, do things differently and stay in motion; we need a POS system that can keep up with us and our customers,” Bruntil said. “If I had to describe in one word what retailers need from POS solutions today, that word would be ‘flexibility.’ We are reimagining the store experience, and the flexibility provided by Aptos ONE is a big part of that.”
With its highly composable architecture and collaborative development framework, Aptos ONE allows retailers to quickly pursue new innovations that adapt to the shifting demands of customers, the market and the business. Its design includes highly resilient offline capabilities, giving retailers the confidence they need to transact anytime and anywhere.
“Whether we are interacting with customers at a slimmer profile checkout station, standing with them side by side on the store floor or taking our retail concepts on the road, we want our associates to feel untethered and able to interact with shoppers in the most natural and optimal way,” said Anderson. “With Aptos ONE, we have a lot more flex in our stores and overall retail operations. The tech is modern, simple to use and seamless. Aptos ONE POS is effective in eliminating barriers between the associate and the customer so the focus is on the experience itself – not on the underlying tech foundation.”
Since its release to the market several years ago, Aptos ONE has been gaining momentum as more retailers trade their on-premise and monolithic software applications for next-gen SaaS solutions that leverage APIs and microservices.
“In 2022, Aptos had record transaction volumes for Aptos ONE POS as our customer base and their number of live devices increased dramatically over 2021,” said Baird. “The reason for this is relatively simple. Retailers want to reinvent their store offerings and need POS systems that provide a springboard for that innovation – not a hindrance.
“But as we will discuss during the Big Ideas session, the path to cloud POS adoption is not without complexity, particularly for retailers that have a large store base and operate across multiple countries.” She added, “We’ll share best practices and pitfalls to avoid in the move to a microservices-based SaaS platform for POS, and attendees will hear directly from New Balance and VF executives as to why it’s a business priority, how far they’ve come and what kind of value they’re achieving along the way.”
